Most churches are familiar with the concept of an interim pastor, but what exactly is an intentional interim pastor?

An intentional interim pastor is an experienced pastor who has received specialized training to guide a church through a season of transition and necessary change before a new pastor is called. The goal is not simply to fill the pulpit but to help prepare the church for a healthy future.

Every church’s needs are unique. Some churches may need assistance with governance or organizational changes. Others may need help restoring unity, strengthening leadership, or rebuilding trust. In some cases, an intentional interim pastor can help a church increase its community presence and outreach. Whatever the specific challenges, the purpose remains the same: to help position the church for greater health and effectiveness so that when a new pastor arrives, the congregation is ready to move forward with confidence.

Our intentional interim ministry continues to grow. To date, we have conducted two training sessions and now have seven trained interim pastors. One of these pastors is currently serving in a church. Our vision is to expand this ministry to approximately 25 trained interims strategically located across the country, making qualified interim pastors more accessible to churches in need.

The training consists of two five-hour online sessions led by a veteran RBM pastor who has received specialized training in intentional interim ministry. The total cost of the training is $500. However, for pastors who have previously served in the Association, the Generate Ministry covers half of the cost.

Churches utilizing an intentional interim pastor should provide a reasonable salary based on the number of hours the pastor is expected to serve each week. Most interim assignments require a minimum of 20 hours per week, although some may be full-time depending on the church’s needs. Factors such as the church’s situation and the pastor’s proximity to the church often influence the expected time commitment.

Housing is frequently another consideration. Because many interim pastors serve at churches located too far from their homes for regular commuting, temporary housing may be necessary to ensure effective ministry. Depending on the circumstances, housing may include a hotel for several nights each week or a furnished parsonage if one is available. A consistent on-site presence is often essential to the success of the ministry.

The length of an intentional interim pastorate ranges from eight to eighteen months. This allows the time needed to walk a church through the necessary changes.

We are praying that God will use this ministry to strengthen churches, restore health where needed, and expand gospel outreach in communities across the country.
