The most effective churches don’t ask: “How do we support our missionaries?”

They ask: “How do we walk with them?”

In Philippians 4:15–19, Paul writes to the people at Philippi and praises them for their support in the early days of his ministry. He partnered with them in the work of the Gospel! What are some practical ways that you can partner with your missionaries? What are some ways you can mobilize your church to be mission-minded? Here are some thoughts I have.

Build real relationships with them. Missionaries excel and thrive when they feel known by the church. Assign a missions care team to each missionary/family. Celebrate life events with them: birthdays, anniversaries, etc… Make it a point to ask about them before asking about ministry.

Communicate consistently. Engagement breaks down when communication is one-sided. Read their newsletters and respond. Use touchpoints such as email, video chats, and voice messages. Allow for open and honest communication. The ultimate goal isn’t oversight as much as it is connection.

Care for your missionaries holistically, not just financially. Funding matters, but so does care for the soul. Consider supporting them in these areas: Emotional & Spiritual care, Rest & Sabbatical support, Counseling resources (especially for cross-cultural stress).

Involve missionaries in the life and rhythm of the church. Even though they may be far away, they can still belong. Try live video updates during the services, small-group Zoom calls, and participation in a missions committee meeting. All of this will reinforce that they are an extension of the church, not a satellite.

Send people, not just money, to minister with your missionaries. Short-term trips work best when they are relational and strategic. Ask your missionaries what kind of help would serve them best. Send skilled teams (teachers, counselors, builders…). Debrief the teams afterward so that learning shapes the whole church.

EveryEthne would be eager to partner with you as a church as you minister to the missionaries you send out. We would count it a privilege to walk with you as you send your missionaries well.

The church is called to send. Let’s make sure we are sending well.

They are based in a major metropolitan city in the US, and their ministry focus is Afghan immigrants and refugees. They work alongside a team of expatriate Afghan believers brought to the US through ABWE’s Afghan Initiative. Scott and his wife previously served with ABWE in Trinidad and Tobago.
